College Life in the Movies

So, this is it. I start classes in three days. As with everything in my life, I've tried to get a sort of preview to campus living through the movies. But I couldn't really think of anything to watch. I re-watched Sweater Girl, but I really hope college isn't like that...murders can be so troublesome. Though I wouldn't much mind the songs...

Does anyone out there (I seeee youuu) have any good college movie recommendations? I'd surely appreciate it. ;)

Have you seen "Good News"(1947) with Peter Lawford and June Allyson? That is a great musical that centers on college. :)

The only one that immediately comes to mind (aside from Good News, which Nicole suggested and I've only heard of) is Daddy Long Legs. There is Vivacious Lady, of course, but that one isn't really about college life, it just has a few scenes at a university.

There’s one I love where a poor girl meets a rich guy and he takes her to the college parties and they go all night from party to party and everyone is in great clothes and there’s a gal who graduated but she’s back and everyone is kind of making fun of her until she changes her hair...I love this movie but my husband deleted it off the DVR and I can’t remember what it’s called! I know I’m not very helpful! Anyway, I love college movies, the clothes are fab!

And good luck to you in your classes! :)

Nicole-- Yes indeed! I love that movie, and will most definitely try to get a viewing in soon, thanks.

Amanda Cooper-- Great suugestions, I actually just bought DLL yesterday. :)

Christopher-- Yes! I brought along Pigskin Parade at the last minute, thank goodness. Like college so far; you're quite right about the cool experiences.

Abby-- Thanks so much, I appreciate it! The next few blogs will be scheduled again, but hopefully still okay.

Trixie-- That sounds an awful lot like The Way We Were...maybe that's it? Love that one, if so. Thanks! :)

Paul-- Ooh, good pick on "College." Haven't seen the Clara Bow one, but it sounds like fun. Horsefeathers too. I have a lot of movie-watching to do, haha.

Wild Party is a curiosity for sure and well-worth seeing. i didnt really care for it when i first saw it many years ago but it's grown on me. it's a perfect example of an early talkie where the studio/crew didnt have much of a handle on the new technology and so it is very visually static and stagey but the cast holds it all together. i actually just watched it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it (thought i readily admit i am not the most objective Clara Bow viewer either, i could watch her all day in total dreck and still be happy!)
i think it was the TCM doc on Clara where they mentioned how MGM took a whole year to prepare Garbo for her talkie debut.... whereas paramount gave Clara about 2 weeks! also of note is that it was directed by Dorothy Arzner, one of the very few woman directors of that time. ok i shut up now!

Hmm, well, I second some of the previous suggestions, like College and The Wild Party. There is another, earlier Clara Bow one, too, The Plastic Age ('25). I'd probably recommend that over the '29 one.
Also:
Sorority House ('39)
The Freshman ('25)
Varsity Show ('37)
All American Co-Ed ('41)

not to overlook The Student Prince,Goodbye Mr. Chips,The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie..oh and a REAL guilty pleasure of mine,Where Angels go,Trouble Follows, which features the ROZ and other old time actors in later years along with a movie making sequence...I might just pop that one in late tonight myself..
and theres Richard Burton in "Dr. Faustus"..heh heh..

Yes definitely Wild Party/Freshman/Horse Feathers, and any of those early thirties Paramount films with College in the title and some combination of Bing/George and Gracie/Jack Oakie/Stuart Erwin in the cast...
Oh, and there's a gorgeous one called Sweetie with Helen Kane...
and Urban Legend, OF COURSE.

You're starting tomorrow, right? Go slay 'em!

Paul-- No, don't shut up! It's fascinating...especially the bit about Dorothy Arzner. :)

Elsie-- Excellent, thanks. I've not even heard of those, so it'll be cool to see them for the first time.

Christopher-- Of course! The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is probably as close to my college experience as I will find, as it's an all girls college.

Matthew-- I assume this "Urban Legend" of which you speak is a little knowwn silent film from about 1923 or something, and not the '98 teen scream flick? ;)

just keep singing,Its Great To Be in College" that ode to the professional student nere-do-well that the Yacht Club Boys sing in Pigskin Parade and you'll do fine!..I envy you

Ah well thanks-- it's going quite well so far.

Juliette - Well, you know I am somewhat limited as to scope of 'older' movies (i.e., movies worth watching) w/o VKM in them, and, let's face it - she just really didn't get to the halls of higher education much - even in Vivacious Lady she was given all the answers ;-)
..but I can tell you that college is definitely worth all the hassle...I am sure you will do great!

It probably won't make you feel so good about college life, but The Rules of Attraction is a great, nasty parody of the typical college comedy. Also, the first act of Mike Nichols and Jules Feiffer's bitter Carnal Knowledge is a pretty fierce indictment of frat boy sexuality.

Sorry I don't seem to have more cheery college movies to recommend; college is actually quite fun. So good luck, and enjoy yourself!
