Today, my lovelies, is move-in day at my college.
Thankfully, I've been here for a week to help with International Orientation, so I'm free to sit in my room all day and watch as my fellow students cart their luggage to their respective rooms. The suckers. ;)
I'm off today, and have planned a delightful Netflix marathon for myself, consisting of--
- Cool Hand Luke ('cause I missed it yesterday)*

- After the Thin Man, which happens to be the only one I've not yet seen, and made twice as nice by the fact that it doesn't have the woefully obtrusive Nick, Jr., who always reminded me --and not in a good way-- of the kid from The Dick Van Dyke Show.

- Elevator to the Gallows, my first venture into Jeanne Moreau land.

Might watch another, if time allows. I'm thinking Klute, Father Goose, Sleuth, or whatever else catches my eye. There are just too many options on Netflix, and in some ways, availability breeds disinterest. For me, at least. I know it's there, so there's no real rush or urgency to see it. Does that make sense? No, probably not. I'm just being lazy.
Also, was looking for some recommendations-- I know a lot about melodramas, but haven't actually seen too many. I'm talking the Douglas Sirk variety, or for later years Tennessee Williams adaptations. I always convince myself they're not my cup of tea, but when I do watch them, I enjoy them 'same as anyone else. So let's hear 'em-- what are your favorites?
*doubly unfortunate, as it was presented on TCM by my manlove, Alec Baldwin

Hey Juliette,
Sounds like you have a good day planned. You're gonna love After The Thin Man. I think it's just as good as the original, maybe even better in some ways. And you're looking for recommendations? Union Station just came out on DVD. It's an awesome thriller with William Holden chasing kidnappers. Melodramas like Imitation of Life, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Place in the Sun are favorites of mine. I just recently watched Cary Grant and Ethel Barrymore in None But The Lonely Heart and I liked it. Different for a Cary Grant film. Definitely not a screwball comedy. So many more movies to choose from, but I'm drawing a blank now. Hope I was of some help to you.
Thanks, Monty! Those are marvelous suggestion! :) I caught Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on TCM yesterday (which actually prompted my melodrama curiosity, haha)-- and have waited to see A Place in the Sun for some time. Think it's airing next week, so that's exciting. I love (love!) None but the Lonely Heart and always bring it up when people say Cary was "only a comedy actor." Thanks much for the recs! :)
My favourite (you'd probably say 'favorite') fellow Confederacy of Dunces fan returns!!!
Oh watch Sleuth, do. No great shakes as movie-making, but very clever. A great night in.
Melodrama-wise, I recommend All I Desire: Sirk meets Stanwyck in the house the Munsters lived in, and if such a thing were possible: even better than that sounds.
I keep a periodic eye out for you (usually the left one) on Pos Med Res... are you not UP yet, or am I looking in the wrong place???
Either way, great to know you're still out there...........
hey there you are! i agree None but the lonely heart, excellent film and way off beat for Cary Grant! anyone who says he could only do comedy just hasnt seen many of his films cuz he could do anything.
hmmmmmmmm, melodramas....you could try Strangers When we meet with Kirk Douglas and Kim Novak, In This Our Life, To Each His Own, A Letter to Three Wives, Humoresque (GREAT film!), Lucky Star or 7th Heaven with Janet Gaynor if you wanna head back into the late 20's, lol.
one of these days I'm gonna sit and watch those Douglas Sirk films. the only one i've seen is the one already recommended, and i agree, def worth a look!
hope you're enjoying your marathon!

Haha! I am quite excited!
I like your marathon! After the Thin Man is highly awesome.
Ehhhh, I HATE melodramas personally. I mean, I ENJOY things like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof...but that's mainly because of Paul Newman. ;-D
Most melodramas I utterly detest! But, yeah, if you watch some good ones...you must let me know! ;-D
Matthew-- Sleuth! Wow-- it was very good, and thank you for the recommendation. Have you ever seen The Last of Sheila? Reminded me of that in bits. Stanwyck and Sirk?? Why has this gone previously unnoticed? Will be looking out for it. Ha, the left eye is good, but no-- they've not put up the page yet. We're trying to start a music link as well, and that's been the main focus so far.
Paul- J'adore (!!) A Letter to Three Wives- I never knew you were a fan! Isn't Linda Darnell fabulous beyond words? I've just bought Humoresque, and was in need of some Joanie anyway, so thanks for that.
Millie-- Yes indeed! After the Thin Man might be my favorite now...or at least, tied with "..Goes Home." :)
Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm too fussed on the genre either, but I always said the same thing about costume dramas as well, until I saw The Heiress. So who knows? :D
I've seen...none of those;)
C'mon Juliette, A Letter to Three Wives has Kirk Douglas in it, say no more :DDD
but it really is a fantastic film for sure, and that rat-a-tat script!!
i'd love to hear what you tought of Humoresque!
oh yeah the heiress can win one over for costume dramas, that's a fact!
I recently got the dvd double of the Janet Gaynor-Charles Farrell silents,7th Heaven and Street Angel from Amazon UK(I'm hacked for all regions)and couldn't be more pleased. You'll never find 2 motion pictures that demonstrate the power of simplicity more than these!
Also for more great example of much ado about nothing,I highly recommend the 3 Douglas Sirk biggies,All That Heaven Allows,Written On The Wind, and Theres Always Tomorrow..
I watched a good melodrama the other day from Leo McCary that I can also recommend called Make Way For Tomorrow..

I found your post very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well!
I think you may actually be my movie soul mate. haha I love Paul Newman and After the Thin Man is one of my favorite movies -- possibly the best of the Thin Man series (although I partial to Shadow of the Thin Man too). If you like the Powell-Loy pairing (and how could you not?), you should find Manhattan Melodrama. It stars them ad Clark Gable =)
